Step By Step
Building the Fountains Abbey
|
Having visited this magnificent Abbey, I suddenly realised that I have a true passion for this type of architecture. So my journey on the quest to find a really inspiring and very challenging project was underway the moment I saw the the place.

The Abbey today is in ruins but still has an amazing appeal. in all its glory it still stands as a testament in time. also on site is a purpose built building that holds a fantastic model of the Abbey as it would have looked before its ruin, however what stood out was as great as the model is, it is only made of wood and is painted in a cream finish. Don't get me wrong it really is a great model and is to scale and although I could not find the actual scale it did look to be about 1:76. It was really this along with the visit that took my mind away into a dreamland of imagining how it would look in stone cast.
So here we are with the journey bout to commence and one in which i would like to share with you all. in fact the journey started about a month ago in early February 2015, because I wasted no time in setting out to create the starting point, The Great Abbey window, Standing at 11.6 Metres high and 5.5 metres wide it just takes your breath away

Here we can see the master Abbey window in all its glory. So the first thing on the agenda was to get that window designed and made using 3D.
After working out the sizes I commissioned the completion of a design I had seen many months earlier, it was a real challenge scaling it to fit perfectly inside what will be during this journey the start of the build March 8th 2015
On the right you can see the mould and the first cast that I created using the new Resin, It needs either a little repair work or I will pour a few more until I get it just right. The next step will be to embed this part into a surrounding stone wall section, then because I want the whole building to be made of stone and not have any resin or plastic parts I will need to create another mould of the embedded part. So while I am awaiting getting this part ready I have started designing the other windows on this main face of the Abbey and am also working on the Abutments. |
