Introduction
As if life is not difficult enough we are faced with products that go by different names, are not available in some parts of the country and even worse are not even available at all depending which country or even which part of a country you live in. so over the coming weeks and months my intention is to provide suppliers, products and a host of information all related to getting the best from your hobby.
Finally let me dispel a small myth, I hate making up the casting material and I really hate selling the stuff, there is no profit in it, its a pain in the backside to be honest, and worse is that I end up covered in white powder and spend ages cleaning it all away. so why do I do it, well its to make sure that Members and especially newbies have something they can rely on and they don't loose the will to live before they even manage to get started. So to this end I would encourage everyone with the will to create their own casting material and that is why there will be no secrets here, I will share with you exactly what I am using and why. the rest is up to you. I will even share with you the suppliers so you can by direct. |
Considerations
What do we need to consider?. well of course the first thing on our mind is the toughness of the casts we are making, however that's only part of the problem. We need to consider Expansion, working times, drying times and of course our very worst enemy - Bubbles. as well as all of that we need to consider using more than one single product, for example if we are casting a large roof sheet we may need strength as well as low expansion to avoid warping, whereas if we are casting a really delicate fine part we really need the high strength. and in all cases we want to eliminate trapped air.
Also I forgot to mention that all important element of cost. there is not much point using your most expensive product just to cast a simple tower roof or a small footpath when it will work just as well in a cheaper but still adequate product |
